A Rise in Instances of Undeclared Ingredients in Herbal Supplements

Yet another supposed “all natural” or “herbal” supplement for erectile dysfunction contains precisely the ingredient that frequent users are intending to avoid. After an FDA lab analysis of a sample of the Viapro revealed that it contained an undeclared and potentially harmful ingredient, thio-methisosildenafil, EG Labs, LLC, announced that it is recalling all lots of its supplement product in 375mg capsules. Thio-methisosildenafil is an analog of sildenafil, which is the active chemical ingredient of several FDA-approved drugs used for Erectile Dysfunction (ED) in men to enhance sexual performance.

Erectile dysfunction is a condition that affects many men diagnosed with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or heart disease. Because of their diagnoses, these men are often given prescription drugs like nitroglycerin, which contains nitrates, to improve blood flow in the body and ease the workload of the heart thereby preventing an angina attack, limiting the number of attacks a person may have, or relieving the pain of a current attack. While taking nitrates, men are told not to take any kind of prescription erectile dysfunction medication like Viagra or Cialis. In fact, during commercials for such drugs, you will certainly hear that the drug should not be taken if you are taking nitrates for chest pain or heart problems. When prescription ED medicines are mixed with nitrates, the combination can lower blood pressure and cause dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting. In some cases, patients have died after mixing erectile dysfunction medicines with nitrates. Therefore, men who suffer from ED and also take nitrates are forced to look for alternative supplements like “all-natural” or “herbal” pills for relief of their ED. However, with these supplements containing the same dangerous ingredient, many men could have suffered serious reactions.
This is the fourth such recall of “herbal” ED supplements in the last four months. Most recently, SEI Pharmaceuticals of Miami, Florida recalled lots of Xiadafil VIP tablets and U.S. Marshals actually seized nearly $74,000 worth of the product for containing a similar undeclared ingredient. In July,, Jack Distribution, LLC of Pompano Beach, Florida issued a nationwide recall of selected lots of “Rize 2 The Occasion” and “Rose 4 Her” capsules for containing such ingredients. And in May, International Pharmaceuticals, Ltd. of Bradford, Massachusetts recalled lots of its supplement product sold under the brand name of “Viril-Ity-Power” for containing the same active ingredient found in ED medications.
